Unlocking the powers of vitamin C

Protection for your skin

Pigmentation 3Your skin deserves all the protection – from daily exposure to the sun’s damaging UV rays and harsh environmental conditions – that you can give it.

Exposure to sun, and environmental assaults such as cigarette smoke and air pollution, dramatically increases the number of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are tiny molecules that ravage skin cells: they speed up photo-ageing by damaging DNA, proteins and lipids, causing skin cells to die. They also break down the collagen that gives skin its youthful resilience, and contribute to other visible signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles.

Your skin relies on antioxidants for protection against free radicals and environmental damage. Since it receives the most intense free-radical assault from UV light exposure, replenishing and increasing the antioxidant defence of the skin becomes an attractive strategy for photo-protection and photo-repair.

Unlocking the powers of Vitamin C

orance-keyVitamin C is essential for maintaining a healthy body and healthy skin. However, the body lacks the enzyme needed to make its own vitamin C. As a result, we rely on dietary intake to replenish our supply, which we get from food such as citrus fruits and dark-green leafy vegetables.

Unfortunately, ingested vitamin C cannot deliver an adequate amount of L-ascorbic acid to the skin. Studies show that, when applied to the skin, L-ascorbic acid stimulates collagen synthesis and protects the skin against sun and free radicals.

Topical vitamin C has also been shown to improve skin texture and tone. It reduces brown spots, decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps to prevent their formation.

If antioxidants are delivered in high concentration through the surface layer into the skin, then we can increase antioxidant reserves and enhance both photo-protection and skin cell repair. More importantly, skin cell rejuvenation and collagen synthesis can be increased.
