What is Rosacea and how can you manage it?

Is this a pain point for you? You’re not alone.

Rosacea is a common, inflammatory skin condition that usually affects the face which some mistake for acne, eczema, or an allergic skin reaction. It’s more common in women and those with lighter skin with symptoms actually appearing worse in men.

Rosacea - River Aesthetics

The origins of rosacea are still debated, however there are triggers that can lead to the presence and flare up.

April is Rosacea awareness month, so to help raise awareness we’re focusing on the different types of Rosacea and how to manage it.

The four kinds of rosacea are:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea – Subtype one is identified with redness, flushing, and thread veins.
  • Papulopustular Rosacea – Subtype two is often known as acne rosacea, is associated with spots and breakouts.
  • Phymatous Rosacea – Subtype three is a rarer form of rosacea linked to thickening of the nose skin, often more commonly found in men.
  • Ocular Rosacea – Subtype four usually only affects the eye area.

Many people experience symptoms of more than one type of rosacea, meaning you may experience a mix of symptoms from each kind.

It’s important to identify the type or types of rosacea that cause your symptoms but to also understand which of your everyday habits and routines may be contributing to your symptoms.

Some simple lifestyle changes could help to improve the symptoms of rosacea…

  • Reduce exposure to ultraviolet and infrared radiation
  • Reduce exposure to the sun – and always wear SPF factor 50
  • Managing stress levels – stress and anxiety can increase inflammation
  • Cut down or avoid altogether spicy foods, dairy, caffeine and alcohol
  • Demodex mite – Also known as eyelash mites, they have increasingly been found to be associated with several skin and eye disorders, including rosacea.

Treatment and a good skincare routine will also help with symptoms. Although rosacea is not a life-threatening condition, it is a chronic disease that requires long-term management of relapsing and remitting symptoms.

A good rosacea skincare routine can:

  • Help your skin feel more comfortable
  • Improve the results you see from any facial treatments you have
  • Boost your skins overall health
  • Reduce/prevent future rosacea flare ups

Treatment recommendations:

IPL

Intense Pulsed Light is a type of facial treatment that uses light wavelengths that are pulsed into the skin. Once the light reaches the skin, the light energy becomes heat energy that can be used to target and remove select skin cells. By focusing on a particular area and removing skin cells that are damaged, or causing damage, the cell rejuvenation process will be triggered, allowing new skin cells to replace the old. This will help to reduce, control, and manage the symptoms by reabsorption of facial veins and improving blood flow.

A course of IPL is a minimum of 3 sessions taken 4-6 weeks apart. At the end of this course, patients will receive a review, where there may be a recommendation for more treatments, depending on the severity and how patient’s skin responds. Find out more.
