Ultrasound Scan for Varicose Veins

Every leg vein consultation will include a free duplex ultrasound scan. The scan uses ultrasound technology to detect if there are any abnormal valves or blood flow blockages. This advanced scan technique is crucial for your vascular surgeon to get a first-hand view of your venous issues before deciding on the best procedure to remove them.

The following vein treatments will be discussed in more detail during your consultation, following your duplex ultrasound scan.

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation)

EVLA uses laser heat to collapse the walls of the vein, it is known as the Gold Standard treatment for Varicose Veins by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence).

RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation)

RFA is also highly rated by NICE, the vein wall is shrunk with the use of radiofrequency thermal heat energy.

VenaSeal / Superglue Treatment

Venaseal uses advanced medical-grade glue to seal and close off faulty vein valves.

Foam Sclerotherapy

Foam Sclerotherapy is another known NICE gold standard treatment option for varicose veins. A foaming sclerosing agent is injected into the veins being treated. The solution causes the vein walls to become sticky and inflamed, causing them to close off. The veins will then naturally shrink and dissolve.

Phlebectomy

A phlebectomy procedure is ideal for larger surface veins. The microsurgery procedure physically removes the vein from the leg via a micro incision

Your Patient Coordinator

Following your consultation, you will be allocated a dedicated patient coordinator who will follow up with you to provide you with a quote for your recommended vein treatment. They will then be your point of contact should you wish to go ahead with your varicose vein treatment.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Your varicose vein treatment will also take place in our Bournemouth clinic.

All treatments are performed as day case procedures in-clinic, under local anaesthetic. They require no overnight stay and are often performed within 30-60 minutes.

Varicose Vein Aftercare

In most cases, it is a requirement that compression stockings are worn following varicose vein removal. You will be provided with these following your treatment.

Most patients can return to their daily activities such as work within 1-2 days following their procedure. Exercise should be avoided for at least 5 days and then returned to a gradual pace to avoid injury.

Fully detailed post-operative advice will be provided to all patients and details for The Private Clinic’s 24 hour help line should you have any concerns following treatment.

Follow-up Appointment

Follow-up appointments take place around 6 weeks following your varicose vein removal procedure. This appointment will take place at our Bournemouth clinic. The vascular surgeon will assess your results and advise if any further treatment may be required. They will also provide information and advice on how to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins again in the future.

FAQ

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that often appear on the legs. They can cause pain, discomfort, and cosmetic concerns. Varicose veins develop when the valves in the veins do not function properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to enlarge.

What causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when the walls of the affected veins become weak. Weak veins cause the valves within the veins to fail, and blood is no longer able to pass through easily. This results in blood pooling within the vein. Over time, this can cause pressure on the vein walls and a bulging appearance is noticeable.

There are certain factors that can put you at risk of developing varicose veins which include:

  • Genetics – A family history of varicose veins can increase your risk of developing varicose veins.
  • Age – As we get older, the risk of developing varicose veins increases.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting – Occupations or lifestyles that involve long periods of standing or sitting can increase the risk.
  • Gender – Women are more likely to develop varicose veins than men, often due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause.
  • Obesity – Excess weight can put added pressure on the veins in the legs.

How to prevent Varicose Veins?

Whilst varicose veins can’t always be prevented, you can help to reduce your risk by:

  • Exercising regularly to improve leg strength and circulation.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Wearing compression stockings if advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Elevating your legs when resting.

What are the symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Typical symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Swollen and bulging veins, often blue or dark purple in colour.
  • Heaviness or fatigue in the legs, especially after long periods of standing.
  • Aching or throbbing pain in the legs.
  • Skin changes, such as darkening or inflammation near the veins.
  • Itching and burning sensations around the affected veins.
